A hot house is uncomfortable. Follow these steps when your AC breaks down to stay cool and get your system running quickly.
Assess the Situation
Check the thermostat settings to ensure they haven’t been accidentally changed. Make sure the unit is set to “cool” and the temperature setting is below the current room temperature. Sometimes, a simple thermostat adjustment can solve the problem.
Check the Power Supply
Ensure that your AC unit is receiving power. Check the circuit breaker or fuse box to see if a breaker has tripped or a fuse has blown. Resetting a tripped breaker or replacing a blown fuse might restore power to your unit. Also, inspect the power switch near the indoor air handler or furnace to ensure it hasn’t been turned off accidentally.
Inspect the Air Filters
Dirty or clogged air filters can restrict airflow and cause your AC system to shut down or operate inefficiently. Locate the air filter in your unit and check its condition. If it’s dirty, replace or clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Regular maintenance of air filters can prevent future breakdowns and improve your system’s efficiency.
Check the Condensate Drain
A blocked condensate drain can cause water to back up into the system, potentially triggering a safety switch that shuts off the AC. Locate the condensate drain line, usually near the indoor air handler, and check for blockages.
Inspect the Outdoor Unit
Go outside and inspect the condenser unit. Ensure that it is free from debris, such as leaves, grass, and dirt, that can obstruct airflow. Clear away any debris around the unit and make sure there is at least two feet of clearance on all sides. Check for visible damage or wear and tear on the unit.
Reset the System
Sometimes, simply resetting the system can resolve minor issues. Turn off the thermostat and the power to the AC unit at the breaker. Wait about five minutes, then turn the power back on and reset the thermostat to your desired settings. This can help reset any minor faults in the system.
